You've been struck by a smooth criminal
« Thread Started on Jul 22, 2008, 7:24am »

It was the twilight hour when the grass rustled, the trees swayed, and the mountains stayed still. Below was a silver clearing. A grey oak leaf twisted and swayed as it fell to the ground. A she-cat stepped out into the clearing. He should be here by now... she thought. He should be here. Amber turned around and around again searching the valley for that brilliant white coat and those chilling blue eyes. She stayed facing one direction for a little while but saw nothing. She turned around slowly to look behind her. Amber's heart stopped for a split second as those icy eyes pierced into hers. When she was focused again she saw clearly those eyes and that white coat. Smoothcriminal had been sitting silently behind her and now he was staring silently at her. He hadn't even let her know he was there.
"Why did you do that?" Amber asked cautiously. Smoothcriminal was quiet for a minute, then he finally spoke.
"I thought you'd know...." His eyes left hers for a second then he looked back. "I was here...." He nuzzled her affectionately, but Amber flinched. "What's wrong?" Amber's eyes flicked off him.
"Oh its just.... um... nothing. nothing. I don't know. No I do.... no.... no I mean I don't."
"What's wrong?" Smoothcriminal asked again, more fiercely this time. Amber swallowed hard.
"No.... no I really don't know...."
"What's wrong!" The tom demanded. Amber knew there was no escaping now. She had to tell him.
"Well.... you know I like you don't you? You know I love you. But before I met you.... I liked someone else.... And I still like them. And they still like me." Smoothcriminal froze. Amber stared at him, wondering how he was going to react. It felt like hours he was still sitting there. But all of a sudden he had turned into a white streak. Horror and dread filled Amber's mind. Smoothcriminal was running round her, round her and back, round and back it was making her feel so dizzy she could hardly breath.
"Don't....." She gasped. "No... no don't you dare! No no no no no! I know what you're up to please no! Don't! Oh StarClan save-" It was too late. Amber's wailing had ceased and she was gone. Smoothcriminal stood back from his work. Amber was lying on the ground, dead, blood trickling from her neck. Her eyes were a pale innocent green, staring up at the moon. Smoothcriminal thought he should pay his respects to the young, dead, and naive she-cat. He dug a hole in the middle of the clearing. He dragged the body into the hole. He licked Amber's wound.
"I still love you." he whispered into her ear before covering the hole. Rain started to fall and made a soft pattering noise on the leaves of the trees. Sorrow coursed through his body. Smoothcriminal shook the water (and sorrow) off his damp body and in an instant he had slipped through the trees, off into the night and the darker corners of the forest.

The trees closed in on him, and the path became tighter. Black wet leaves pushed against his face but still he carried on. A twisting branch of a tree curved across his path. He scratched up along the bendy branch, which wasn't leading him far at all from the ground. In fact it was leading him straight down his path. The branch began to slope up wards a bit more. When Smoothcriminal was about two tail lengths above the ground, a badger ambled out from the jet black bushes. Smoothcriminal held his breath. He saw the black and white head look left and right before crossing over his path, into the dark undergrowth on the other side. Smoothcriminal silently carried on. He suddenly saw a hole between the thick leaves and couldn't help peering through it. He saw two male cats. One was black brown and white, the other was black and white. There was also a very beautiful she-cat, who was a stunning dark tabby with brilliant golden eyes.
"You already have Amber though, don't you?" The black and white tom spat.
"I don't know where she is though!" Retorted the other cat. "That's the trouble with her. You never know where she is!"
"If you loved her you would find her." The other tom said quietly. Smoothcriminal froze. Perhaps he was the one who Amber had fallen in love with.
"Maybe I would." He said slyly. "But maybe whilst I was looking I would stumble across a beauty like this one!" He pointed at the she-cat.
"That's no excuse!" The black and white tom hissed. He arched his back and unsheathed his claws.
"Challenge me any time Rainfoot." The other replied. He smiled. "Any time...." At this the she-cat stepped in between the two, ready to tell them to stop, when Smoothcriminal leaped off his branch and into the bushes.
"I killed Amber." He said coldly. All the cats gasped. The mottled tom instinctively pounced. Smoothcriminal chucked him off easily. The cat knew this tom could kill him if he wasn't careful, so he ran off somewhere. For a few heartbeats Rainfoot stared angrily at him, but soon chose wisely to scamper off after the other tom. Smoothcriminal was left with the pretty young she-cat. He walked slowly up to her. She looked him deep in the eyes.
"My name's Annie." She said in a silky voice that she probably used around toms. "Yours?" Smoothcriminal came closer.
"Smoothcriminal." He said cooly. "Oh, and Annie- That's a lovely name."
"Smooth... criminal?" She smiled a very pretty smile indeed. Smoothcriminal slipped past her, away into more wet black leaves. He smiled to himself. Annie was sure to have trapped him in her heart now.

Smoothcriminal could hear Annie following him. "You need a place to stay." She said eventually, coming round to confront him. "Can I show you my place?"
"What do you mean your place?"
"Well- where I sleep and spend most of my time in a suppose." She replied. "Come on, follow me. Then maybe we could spend some time together." Smoothcriminal chuckled silently. This happened every single time. Annie led him to a fallen tree trunk. It has moss growing and dangling off it. Next to it were various rocks, glowing silver.
"It's beautiful." Smoothcriminal turned to her. "Like you." Annie seemed to be pleased by all this flattery. She nuzzled and rubbed herself around him and purred.
"I love you and I only just met you," She told him. "But who wouldn't love you? You're just so.... I don't know."
"Lovely? Gorgeous?" He joked. Annie pounced on him playfully. "Funny?" His muffled voice sounded again from beneath her. He saw her roll her eyes and laughed out loud. These were good times. And this good time couldn't get any better for a smooth criminal.

****
A sharp ear splitting yowl echoed through the dense forest, making them both freeze. Without meowing his goodbye, Smoothcriminal slipped away to where the sound had come from.
"No! Stop!" Meowed Annie. "You don't know what's there! You... you might get hurt!"
"Don't stop me from doing my duties! No she-cat has the right to tell me what to do!" He growled over his shoulder, and he was gone.
"Your.... duties?" Annie mewed quietly to herself, puzzled.

Smoothcriminal stalked away, his tail fur fluffed up. Who ever- or, what ever was doing something he didn't like, he'd soon sort them out. It seemed forever before he got there, but eventually the trees parted to reveal five cats. Smoothcriminal decided to hide so he could hear what was going on. Each of the cat's pelts were gleaming like fire.
"Tonight is no time for fighting. Tonight is the time to promise less fighting." The largest tom meowed. A dark breeze swept past all of them. "I have decided that too much violence is going on."
"I agree." An old she-cat rasped. "Now adays our land is a place of screams and terror. So much so it seems the whole forest is drowning in innocent blood. I have even read it in the stars, you know," She finished.
"So what are we to do?" a younger cat mewed.
"What we must do is clear." The lead tom spoke again, lashing his tail. "We must each send one cat a dream. A terrible dream. A dream of rivers of blood, yowls and screams of terror- and in it we must include a prophecy."
"What will it be?" All the cats asked.
"Cats have fought, blood has been shed, for no reason. When dawn drowns in the waves, life will stop for no reason." Smoothcriminal felt dizzy. The prophecy whirled around in his head. Spinning and spinning... he felt so bad that he ran away as fast as his legs could carry him. He had heard too much. He had heard the prophecy that he was never meant to hear. Cats have fought, blood has been shed, for no reason. When dawn drowns in the waves, life will stop for no reason..... Cats have fought, blood has been shed, for no reason. When dawn drowns in the waves, life will stop for no reason..... Cats have fought, blood has been shed, for no reason. When dawn drowns in the waves, life will stop for no reason......
